Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a subset of cognitive-behavioral therapy tailored to the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In PTSD, clients experience distortions in thoughts and feelings about themselves and their environment, especially those dealing with safety, control, intimacy, trust, and self-esteem. Using CPT, our therapists teach a set of skills that interrupt those distortions.

CPT is effective for anyone with a PTSD diagnosis, particularly for persons who anticipate additional traumatic encounters, like first responders and military personnel. Over the course of weekly sessions, our therapists work with the client to explore the ways trauma may have altered their thoughts, feelings, and actions. Together, client and therapist partner to restructure negative interpretations of events, known as “sticking points,” thereby gaining a healthier perspective on the trauma.

PTSD leads to negative emotions like fear, anxiety, guilt, and anger, all of which can impede recovery. By challenging the negative thoughts behind these emotions, our therapists help clients craft a new narrative on their traumatic experiences, regaining control of their lives.
